Inhaltsangabe: Einleitung: Gott ist tot. Gerade in der Debatte um Reproduktionsmedizin und Molekularbiologie wird ersichtlich, dass die Zeiten von Immanenz und Transzendenz, im Hinblick auf Erlösung und Verschiebung von Problemstrukturen auf das Jenseits, der Vergangenheit angehören. Der Mensch ist zum „Meister" seiner eigenen Disposition geworden und liegt in der Debatte um die daraus resultierende Ethik und Moral um Jahrhunderte zurück. Schon seit Jahrtausenden macht sich der Mensch Gedanken über schöne, gesunde und gute Nachkommen. Sokrates und Glaukon forderten Gesetze, damit nur die besten Männer mit den besten Frauen möglichst oft, und die schlechtesten Männer mit den schlechtesten Frauen möglichst wenig verkehren durften. Verlockend der Gedanke das Krankheiten schon in ihrer genetisch angelegten Struktur verhindert werden kann. Geradezu zynisch zu wissen das eine Gesellschaft ohne „Schwache und Verlierer" nicht funktionstüchtig sein kann. Das biologische Schicksal ist voraussehbar, planbar und korrigierbar geworden und lässt nur erahnen, welches Potential an Kontrollierbarkeit hier möglich ist. Sicher ist allerdings eines, wir werden uns über eine völlig neue Konstruktion Mensch unterhalten müssen, und es wird auch unabdingbar sein demzufolge über eine völlig andere, noch nicht vorhersehbare Gesellschaftsordnung zu sprechen. In der gesamten Biodiskussion sind die Demarkationslinien noch nicht klar gezogen und bieten daher in erster Linie für viele Menschen Unsicherheit und Unverständnis angesichts eines so umfassenden Themenkomplexes. Aber eines dürfte sicher sein. Endlich haben wir es geschafft. Endlich sind wir Herr, wenigstens auf biologischer Ebene, Herr unser selbst.
