About the Book

The ancient structures have incorporated with wide range of building materials like stone, brick and timber. The binding materials like clay, gypsum and lime is used to bond the stones & bricks. Out of the binders mentioned, lime is predominately used as a mortar in various applications like construction of houses, bridges, dams etc. The major reason behind the decline of gypsum or clay mortars is due to the softening or disintegrating behaviour in the presence of moisture. In comparison to the former discussed binders, lime mortars are sufficiently robust, weatherproof and could be the reason behind the wide application of lime mortars as a building material.

Historically, lime was among the most important binders, and early examples of using it was identified in Palestine and Turkey, dated 12,000 BC. In the mid-eighteenth century, the ancient architects adopted the use of hydraulic binders in place of regular lime binders and, further limited due to the invention of Portland cement binder in the latter part of nineteenth century. Certainly, the development has encouraged due to the applicational draw backs of lime mortars such as longer setting and hardening periods at higher relative humidity, higher porosity, poor cohesion between the internal particles which leads to the reduction in mechanical properties. At higher water saturated conditions, the risk of crystallization of salts and freezing is inevitable. Due to the awareness of the unfavourable properties of cement binder, there has been a resurgence of the lime binder as a repair material for historic buildings is observed in recent years.

Lime mortar structures have a natural tendency both to retain and evaporate moisture from the walls, thereby retaining a state of equilibrium with the external environment. Therefore, lime mortars surfaces can readily absorb and evaporate moisture. The function of the lime mortar joints becomes more important in less permeable masonry, such as granite-built walls, to allow free passage of moisture.
