About the Book

This book is a collection of poems and excerpts from letters sent to the publisher by the author over a period of some fifteen years or so. The author, Russell Lichter, is an unknown poet who has never sought any publicity; and, in fact, the publisher, who was coincidentally a good friend and a former co-worker of the author, was the one who conceived of producing this project. The first section consists of consciously-composed poems by Russell Lichter. The second section is a composition of found poetry produced by the publisher by excerpting "great poems hidden within Lichter's letters." These two sections combined produce a great sense of the wit, wisdom, compassion and spiritual insight of this unusual hermit-like soul living in a remote part of Marin.
About the Author: I was born in Long Branch, New Jersey. The doctor who delivered me was a personal friend of Albert Einstein. I was educated at Vail Homes Grammar School, Tinton Falls Grammar School, Red Bank High School, Rome Free Academy, Utica College of Syracuse University, Mansfield College (Oxford), Los Angeles City College, Santa Monica City College, and finally the University of California at Los Angeles. From where I was graduated with honors. For several years I worked for a small legal newspaper in the Bradbury Building and then as a typesetter to support my painting habit. I did not return to UCLA to do an M.F.A in painting or an M.S. in physical anthropology. I did work third shift at Univac and drank beers and ate roast beef sandwiches in Charlie Parker's. I did ride through the woods in an old Chrysler and once carved part of a poem on a rock in a stream. I first fell in love at the age of 21 although I'd been interested in women since I can remember. I used to ride a Merlin road bike all over Marin. I write poems. I write reviews for audiophiles. I continue to be baffled that as a species we can't get along and don't know how to behave on this most beautiful and welcoming of planets.
