About the Book

Sir Robert 'Bobby' Charlton CBE, born in Ashington, Northumberland, England, UK on 11th October 1937 was a professional footballer who played as a midfielder or centre-forward. Widely regarded as 1 of the greatest players of all time, he was a member of the England team that won the FIFA World Cup of 1966, having been presented with the Ballon d'Or that year then being the runner up in 1967 & 1968. Bobby played nearly all of his club football at Man. Utd, where he was renowned for his attacking instincts, passing from midfield, ferocious long-range shooting with both feet, fitness, and stamina. Charlton was only booked twice in his career; against Argentina in the World Cup of 1966 & in a league match against Chelsea. He was one of 9 players to have lifted the FIFA World Cup, the European Cup and the Ballon d'Or. His elder brother Jack, who was also in the World Cup-winning team, was a former defender for Leeds Utd & international manager. Bobby made his debut for the Man. Utd 1st-team during 1956, aged 18, soon claiming a regular place in the team. He became a Football League First Division champion the following year then survived the Munich air disaster of February 1958 after being rescued by teammate Harry Gregg. Charlton was the last survivor of the crash from the club. After winning the FA Cup with United in 1963 then the Football League during 1965 and 1967, he captained the team that won the European Cup of 1968, scoring a couple of goals in the final as Man. Utd became the 1st English club to win the competition. Bobby left to become manager of Preston North End for the 1973-74 season then player-manager the following season. He was a director of Wigan Athletic, before becoming a member of Manchester United's board of directors in 1984. Charlton was in the England squad at the World Cups of 1958, 1962, 1966 & 1970, although he didn't play in the first. When he retired from the England team during 1970, Bobby was the country's most capped player, with 106 times appearances, which Bobby Moore exceeded in 1973. Charlton was a record goalscorer for Man. Utd and England & United's record appearance maker for a long-time, his 758 matches being eclipsed by Ryan Giggs in the Champions League final of 2008. With 249 goals, he was the club's highest all-time goalscorer for over 40 yrs, until his record was surpassed by Wayne Rooney during 2017.
