About the Book

Entre 1935 y 1965 el bolero dominó el espectro musical latinoamericano. Fue promovido primero por la radio y los programas en vivo, luego los discos de 78, 46 y 33 RPM llamados acetatos; después el cine y finalmente la televisión. Vino desde España hasta Cuba con unas características diferentes a las actuales y de allí pasó a México, que, por intermedio del acetato, primero, y luego a través de películas, a otros países latinoamericanos, especialmente República Dominicana, Venezuela y Puerto Rico.

En un principio el bolero tendría el acompañamiento musical de tríos de guitarras, cuartetos, quintetos y sextetos, luego el de las grandes orquestas tropicales como la Sonora Matancera en Cuba, la Billo's Caracas Boys en Venezuela y la Orquesta Rafael Muñoz, de Puerto Rico y por último las verdaderas orquestas sinfónicas.

Hay varios subgéneros del bolero, a saber: bolero rítmico, bolero cha-cha-cha, bolero mambola, bolero son, bolero vallenato, bolero ranchero, bolero cantinero, bachata, filin y bolero moruno, entre otros. El bolero es el género musical popular que mejor expresa el romanticismo del pueblo latinoamericano. Sea para el amor o el desamor, el bolero sirve para expresar sentimientos con exactitud. Su culto en el continente llevó a que sea el único género con apodo: los locutores suelen llamarlo "Su majestad" o "Señor bolero".

El bolero es un hijo musical de la contradanza española. La boleróloga Tania Ruiz precisa que el bolero fue traído a América vía La Habana por músicos hispanos que interpretaban canciones flamencas y que progresivamente las fueron mezclando con ritmos africanos y sonidos autóctonos a los que llamaron habaneras, que reforzaron más tarde con la incorporación de los trovadores o cantores, llamados así porque interpretaban sus propias creaciones.

Este libro contiene una microbiografía de sus más famosos intérpretes y las canciones que hicieron del bolero el género musical popular que mejor expresa el romanticismo del pueblo latinoamericano.
