About the Book

The Bonesetter, a screenplay, is based on the Autobiography of A.T. Still whose first edition was first printed in 1897. That is, The Bonesetter is based singularly upon the first edition-first printing and is based on no other version of Dr. Still's autobiography. The Bonesetter was written over the course of four years and only after I had very carefully read and reread the first edition-first printing as well as the subsequent myriad of editions and printings, did I decide that the purest vision of Dr. Still's life and views is the aforementioned version and that I consider it to be the only version that hasn't been tampered with by outside forces. It is important to note that at the time of Dr. Still publishing his first iteration of his autobiography, he was on the very precipice of his fame and fortune as the founder of osteopathy, but importantly, events had not yet overtaken him. This was a curious time for Dr. Still because the American School of Osteopathy was on the verge of becoming incredibly noteworthy and Kirksville, Missouri itself while still considered a sleepy hamlet at this time, would suddenly, it seems, become a point on everyone's map. Moreover, when I read the first edition, there are definite passages where one could feel that Dr. Still is fearful of living a life unnoticed and of founding a discovery that will be forgotten. Of course, all of that would change almost immediately after publishing, and furthermore, everything connected to Dr. Still would become valuable, lucrative, and of importance to an amassing entourage, including the Autobiography of A.T. Still. Almost immediately, words would be changed, passages deleted, and terms modified all in the coming editions and printings. For better or for worse, future editions would lose critical moments in Dr. Still's life that would prove shaping to him and to us, more than one hundred years after Dr. Still's death. The Bonesetter is an illustration of Dr. Still's formative life from 1862-1892 as told in the first edition-first printing of the Autobiography of Dr. Still.
