About the Book

Born in Berne, Switzerland, in 1745, Charles Victor de Bonstetten was an outstanding and charismatic figure during the period of transition in Europe, as the Enlightenment gave way to Romanticism. This historical edition of the BONSTETTIANA offers the first comprehensive collection of known letters written and received by Bonstetten as well as those exchanged among his foremost correspondents. Altogether, more than 500 such relationships are covered, spanning Switzerland, England, Scandinavia, France, Italy, Germany, eastern Europe and Greece. This complex web of correspondence offers a fascinating insight into the course of European history between 1753 and 1832, the year of Bonstetten's death in Geneva. The entire collection of some 5 200 documents - most of them written in French or German - is arranged in chronological order and presented clearly and systematically with extensive commentaries. The authoritative, easy-to-read transcription and the inclusion of a number of facsimiles enable the reader to form a clear and vivid impression of the original manuscripts."
