About the Book

This book has been written not in the tone and temper of a heavy text giving encyclopedic information on every aspect of book-publishing in detail. It is written in an easy style to help understand the basic principles involved in the making of books in an ideal form. As in every other field of human activity there is an ideal model as to how things should be done, in book publishing too there is an ideal, principled manner of doing it. But, in practice, sometimes get different and become perverted. So, there is difference between principles and practices. Both the theory and practice in real life have been described. It contains chapters on author-publishers relationship, editing, production, designing, copyright, book-selling, book-clubs and many subjects which all authors and publishers must understand. This book is meant for those who want to enter the profession of publishing and writing of books as well as those who are already in it. It will be of interest to book-lovers and all those who just know about books as they see them at book-shops. They have no idea about the complex world of writing and publishing and the effort that goes into the making of books before they reach the hands of a reader. To my mind, says Dina N. Malhotra, the aim of book publishing is dissemination of knowledge in every field of human activity for the progress of human race. This is a part of that dissemination.About the AuthorDina N Malhotra is the recipient of UNESCO\'s prestigius International Book Award for 1988. He is the first Indian and the second Asian to receive this Award. His main contribution in the field of publishing has been to usher in the Paperback Revolution in India. In 1958 he established Hind Pocket Books for the publication of low-priced paperbacks in Indian languages and English. A post-graduate in Political Science from Punjab University, he obtained a first-class first and is a Gold-Medalist. He started his career as a lecturer in Political Science for Graduate and Post-Graduate classes in Srinagar. After a short stint in teaching, he joined book publishing. He has been a member of the National Book Development Council of India since its inception. He has served as a UNESCO Book Consultant since 1966 and has visited many countries organising seminars, workshops, and prescribed over numerous conferences. He brought India into the fold of the International Publishers Association in 1956 at the XIV International Publishers Congress in Florence, Italy. He prepared a mega-book entitled \'60 Years of Book-Publishing in India\' which has become a standard reference book on Indian Publishing all over the world. He is an expert in the field of copyright. He has been the President of the Federation of Indian Publishers a number of times. He is now President-Emeritus of the Federation of Indian Publishers. He was awarded the \'Padma Shree\' in February, 2000 in recognition of his work for book reading and promotion in the country.
