About the Book

After his adventures on the other side of the great Mountain, Tam Goatland tries to settle down to the ordinary life of a boy goatherd. Until, that is, a routine trip down to the market at Mountain Town. Curiosity - always this boy's undoing - leads him to the River. And rivers all lead to the sea ... With only young Tarl, like him an unwilling passenger, for company, Tam is taken out to where the islands - known to him only as stories - beckon. And adventure, at the hands of the grim men of Gornost, comes to him again. He meets new friends - the sad and lovely Riana, the humorous Meg - and embarks on a perilous mission to aid them. This book is dedicated to all young readers who love adventure - and all older readers who remember fondly the adventure tales of their youth.
About the Author: Alan Robertshaw was born and brought up on Merseyside. Educated at Oldershaw Grammar School, he had the great good fortune to be one of the very first undergraduates at the brand new University of York, graduating with First Class honours in 1966. After taking his Masters at the same university, he was offered - and accepted - a post teaching English at the Manchester Grammar School. Professionally there followed posts teaching English in Sheffield, heading the English department at Garforth Comprehensive in Leeds, as Deputy Head at Rufford Comprehensive in the Nottinghamshire coalfields, and finally as Headteacher at the Foulstone school in Barnsley. All of this rich experience has fed, in retirement, his lifelong interest in writing fiction. Publications include four titles for the late Edward Blishen's Piccolo Adventure Library in the 1970's; and more recently two adult novels, The Edge of Things, and Slow Furies. The two volumes of the adventures of Tam Goatland mark a return to fiction addressed mainly - but by no means only - to younger readers. In personal life, Alan has been married happily for half a century, and has the deep pleasure of a large and loving family.
