About the Book

Teenage girl, who has daydreams of saving the world and being a secret agent, realizes that in order to make her dreams come true, she has to take the brake off of her life.Dawn, a teenager, lives in a quiet town, with her mother, Julie. Dawn's father died when she was five, but her mother never talks about him. Dawn is called "bubblehead" at school, because she's constantly daydreaming and dresses like a hippy. She's something of an outcast, failing to fit into any school clique. Dawn jokingly tells herself that she's Brake of Dawn, because she's going nowhere. Even Dawn wonders about herself, as her dreams are beyond bizarre. She dreams of traveling to foreign countries and stealing government secrets, stopping assassinations, rescuing hostages, and other dreams that would be more appropriate as an Action/Adventure movie. Dawn also has an uncanny knack for foreign languages. One day, neighbors move into the vacant house across the street. Bruce, his little brother Morgan, and his father, Greg. Dawn is immediately smitten by Bruce, who is ruggedly handsome. While she's not admitting it, Julie is also attracted to Greg. Being Dawn, she manages to embarrass herself, as she meets Bruce for the first time. She offers to show Bruce around the town and then they go to school together, with Dawn advising, as she rolls out of the car, "Don't let people know that you know me." Bruce is an instant sensation at school, with all of the girls wooing over him. When Dawn finally meets Greg, he seems to go into shock, as Dawn says her name, Dawn Ashton. Greg relates that he had known a Don Ashton, many years ago. Greg advises that he works for the FBI, with Dawn relating that Greg probably didn't know her father, as her father was just a businessman. The two families get to know each other, with Dawn and Bruce falling in love, as well as Greg and Julie. Greg finally relates that Dawn's father had worked for the CIA. As Greg begins to tell about the legend of Don Ashton, the stories sound familiar to Dawn. She then realizes that all of her dreams were things that her father had accomplished. That the dreams were meant to encourage her, to take the brake off of her life and begin living her life, realizing her dreams.
