SEGUNDA EDICION....El siglo XIX trajo cambios provocados por la Revolución Industrial, muchos europeos se encontraron con la necesidad de emigrar a las Américas buscando un mejor porvenir y nuevas aventuras comerciales. Entre ellos dos suizos del cantón de Berna, Carlos Augusto Cunier y David Salomón Bratschi. Los dos llegaron juntos en 1858 a lo que fue la futura colonia suiza, Nueva Helvecia, Uruguay. Cunier compra de la "Sociedad Agrícola del Rosario Oriental" chacras para ser revendidas a otros colonos suizos que empiezan a llegar en 1861. Bratschi vive con su familia en la casa de Cunier, este último una vez terminados sus negocios vuelve a Europa. Bratschi se queda y se establece en tierras asignadas para colonos agrícolas, convirtiéndose así en el primer colono suizo afincado tres años antes del resto de los inmigrantes. La nueva ley de inmigración del Uruguay facilita la radicación de extranjeros otorgando autonomía propia siempre que se respetaran las leyes del país. Mas importante aún fue que los colonos agrícolas eran exentos de pago de impuestos por los primeros diez años. Al principio los colonos suizos no se integran a la sociedad local, pero tampoco se integran a su propia comunidad. Si bien trabajan para el beneficio común de la comunidad, los colonos continúan albergando ideas separatistas que trajeron de la vieja patria. Los conflictos religiosos fueron evidentes por casi un siglo, siendo después de la segunda guerra mundial que se abren las puertas a la integración completa entre religiones y entre "criollos" y "gringos". David tiene tres esposas, con las que tuvo trece hijos, diez de ellos nacidos en Uruguay en un plazo de cuarenta años. Todos los Bratschi del Río de la Plata descienden de David Salomón Bratschi como se ha demostrado en este trabajo con investigación genealógica.
