About the Book

Breast cancer, a formidable adversary in the realm of health, stands as the most prevalent invasive cancer affecting women globally. As an intricate interplay of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors, breast cancer demands a comprehensive understanding and strategic approach for both prevention and management. This multifaceted disease has woven itself into the fabric of human history, leaving an indelible mark that transcends centuries. In ancient times, when medical knowledge was veiled in mystique, breast cancer manifested as a visible foe, often chronicled in ancient documents. The disease's presence was acknowledged due to its outward signs-breast tumors that could be felt through the skin. Unlike other internal organ malignancies shrouded in invisibility, breast cancer made its mark with fungating lesions, presenting as necrotic tumors breaking through the skin and weeping fetid fluids. The ancient Egyptians, among the first to document such afflictions, left traces of breast cancer dating back 4200 years to the Sixth Dynasty. The medical landscape of the time, steeped in humoralism and the belief in imbalances of fundamental bodily fluids, attributed breast cancer to an excess of black bile or, alternatively, viewed it as divine punishment. The journey through the annals of breast cancer history reveals the evolution of its understanding and treatment. From the earliest mastectomies proposed in AD 548 to the 17th-century debates on surgical approaches and the 18th-century emergence of theories linking breast cancer spread to lymph nodes, the medical community grappled with limited knowledge and often harrowing treatments. The 19th century witnessed a dramatic shift with the advent of sanitation and control of infectious diseases, leading to increased lifespans and, consequently, a surge in breast cancer cases. Surgical prowess advanced, epitomized by William Stewart Halsted's radical mastectomies, albeit at the cost of long-term pain and disability.
