About the Book

English summary: Clemens Brentano's stay in Vienna in 1813 and 1814 is characterized by the collision of an autonomous poetry with the situation of a metropolis at the time of the wars of liberation. The problems inherent in the plays, poems and prose that were produced under these circumstances have already been described by Brentano's contemporaries, with the help of the concept of the monstrous. This study is prompted by questions about the unique nature of these works and about the resulting conflicting poetological, political and historical trends. It addresses all aspects of Brentano's stay in Vienna. All of Brentano's plays from the Vienna period as well as his lyrical and critical works from this period are discussed. The focus is on the play "Viktoria und ihre Geschwister" (Victoria and her siblings) which in its complex textual genesis reveals in detail the various stages of adjustment, self-assertion, and reflection on the incompatibility of poetry and history.
