About the Book

English summary: The two electors Frederick the Wise and Johann the Steadfast were key figures in early Reformation history. As sovereigns of Martin Luther, they created the political framework for the dissemination and implementation of the Wittenberg Reformation. This edition seeks to make the ecclesiastical-political letters and records of these two outstanding Ernestine-Saxon Reformation princes accessible to research in ecclesiastical and general history for the first time on a broad basis. Volume 2 offers more than 1100 documents from the period between 1518 and 1522. Martin Luther's theses on indulgences, which resulted in a heresy trial, increasingly became a focus of Saxon church politics starting in the spring of 1518. The sources illustrate the explosive nature of the early Reformation movement in a phase when an authoritarian control of Reformation processes could not yet develop. In addition, traditional themes related to church politics and lines of conflict, as already documented in Volume 1, remained on the agenda during these years.
