Das Sefer Chofetz Chaim, Lebenslust ist das Hauptwerk von Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan, der später einfach als Chofetz Chaim bekannt wurde. Das Buch befasst sich mit der jüdischen Ethik und den Gesetzen der Rede und gilt als die maßgebliche Quelle zu diesem Thema.
Der Titel des Werks Chofetz Chaim von Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan ist den Psalmen entnommen:
Kommt, Kinder, hört auf mich; ich will euch die Furcht des Herrn lehren. Wer ist der Mensch, der das Leben begehrt, der Tage liebt, um das Gute zu sehen? Hüte deine Zunge vor dem Bösen und deine Lippen vor trügerischem Reden. Meide das Böse und tue das Gute, suche Frieden und jage ihm nach. - [Psalm 34:12-15]
Das Thema des Buches ist hilchos shmiras halashon [Gesetze der reinen Rede]. Rabbi Kagan liefert zahlreiche Quellen aus der Tora, dem Talmud und den Rishonim [frühen Kommentatoren] über die Strenge des jüdischen Gesetzes über Klatsch und Tratsch. Lashon Hara, was so viel wie böse Rede bedeutet [oder auch Klatsch und Verleumdung und Verbote der Diffamierung], wird manchmal mit Verleumdungsverboten übersetzt, bezieht sich aber im Wesentlichen auf das Verbot, böse/schlechte/unangenehme Dinge über eine Person zu sagen, unabhängig davon, ob sie wahr sind oder nicht.
Das Buch ist in drei Teile gegliedert:
Mekor Chayim ["Quelle des Lebens"], der Gesetzestext.
Be'er mayim chayim ["Brunnen des lebendigen Wassers"], die Fußnoten und das juristische Argument.
Es wird üblicherweise zusammen mit dem Text Shemirath ha-Lashon ["Hüter der Zunge"] gedruckt, einer ethischen Abhandlung über den richtigen Gebrauch des Sprachvermögens.
