Buenas gentes de Óscar Robles incluye ocho cuentos de ficción situados en la provinciana ciudad de Chihuahua, entre las décadas de los sesenta a principios del siglo XXI. Los espacios físicos y geográficos dominantes son las actuales colonias Campesina y Zarco y el Centro Histórico de dicha ciudad capital norteña. Entonces, las colonias urbanas funcionaban como pequeños pueblos o patrias chicas. La mayoría de los personajes de los relatos son amas de casa, comerciantes, empleados, obreros, estudiantes y vendedores ambulantes. Todos ellos y ellas se caracterizan por ser buenas personas o "buenas gentes" en general, gente normal, dentro de los contextos históricos y sociales en que son ubicados ficcionalmente por el autor de la presente colección.

La mayoría de los personajes de esta colección de cuentos proviene del medio rural chihuahuense, habita el oeste de la ciudad capital, posee casas y pequeños negocios propios y enfrenta conflictos cotidianos y "normales", los cuales son determinados por la realidad social construida bajo el subdesarrollo económico en México. En ese tiempo, emergen los albores del capitalismo global en la capital del llamado Estado Grande, justo durante la segunda mitad del siglo XX.
Una parte de estos seres de ficción busca realizar sus sueños. Por ejemplo, el carnicero Rafael Silveira pretende alcanzar una carrera artística en "Javier Solís en la carpa de teatro"; la comerciante Evangelina trata de liberarse de la autoridad patriarcal de su padre y encontrar a un enamorado en "Tienda de abarrotes El Nuevo Horizonte"; un hombre maduro transcurre un periodo de su vida enamorado de una mujer en "La china del café".

En cambio, otros personajes enfrentan problemas físicos, familiares y/o económicos. Doña Fátima padece serios dolores de cintura y busca diferentes curaciones en "La mano de Dios"; Pedro Barajas y Emilia Blancas atraviesan por un serio drama conyugal en "El borracho de la lotería"; el comerciante Santiago tiene problemas económicos y piensa buscar trabajo en otro lugar en "El mojado"; el vendedor ambulante Juan de Dios y el comerciante Abel dudan sobre la identidad de sus padres en "El carnal"; y, finalmente, un niño padece un serio problema físico en el salón de clases en "El Limbo".
En especial, los ocho cuentos se caracterizan por desarrollar la estética (neo) realista y una narrativa urbana, de manera sencilla. Por un lado, abordan algunas situaciones sociales, recrean hablas populares y expresiones coloquiales y exponen diferentes modos de vida propios del subdesarrollo económico en México. En esa etapa histórica, México vivía bajo el capitalismo moderno de economía cerrada, la ideología cultural del Nacionalismo Revolucionario y el gobierno del Estado autoritario con un partido único en el poder de la república: El Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI).

Las ocho narraciones presentan problemas personales, de familia y empleo. Incluyen numerosas referencias a la cultura de su tiempo: Diversos productos culturales y programas difundidos por los medios de comunicación masiva y distintos eventos deportivos y sociales, los cuales sucedieron durante las últimas cuatro décadas del siglo XX en Chihuahua capital y/o México, principalmente. Asimismo, aparecen en los relatos datos someros sobre el cine, el futbol, el beisbol, el basquetbol, la comida, los negocios locales y globales, los productos comerciales de la época y otros aspectos relevantes.
