About the Book

"Bullying" is a term that's being, well, bullied. It's been rendered essentially powerless by being constantly kicked around," writes nationally recognized bullying expert Elizabeth Kandel Englander. In this practical and insightful book, Englander dispels pervasive myths and misconceptions about peer cruelty, bullying, and cyberbullying. Drawing on her own and others' research, she shows how educators can flag problematic behaviors and frame effective responses. Englander puts a special focus on "gateway" behaviors--those subtle actions that, unchecked, can quickly escalate into more serious misbehavior--and explores how students perceive their own and their peers' behavior.

Written in an accessible, conversational tone and informed by careful research, this timely book is an essential guide for educators. Key takeaways include the impact of technology on social behavior, a framework for responding effectively to bullies--including innovative ideas about the role of social peers--and suggestions for working with parents.
About the Author:

Elizabeth Kandel Englander is a professor of psychology and the founder and director of the Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center (MARC) at Bridgewater State University. MARC delivers antiviolence and antibullying programs, resources, and research for the state of Massachusetts and nationwide. Dr. Englander is a nationally recognized researcher and expert in the area of bullying and cyberbullying; childhood causes of violence, aggression, and abuse; and child development. She has a particular interest in technological aggression and how it interacts with peer abusiveness in general. MARC is the only center in public higher education that provides no- or low-cost cutting-edge programs and research for hundreds of schools every year. Dr. Englander trains and supervises graduate and undergraduate students and collaborates with multiple agencies around Massachusetts and across the nation.

Dr. Englander writes for both academic audiences and the public. She was the special editor for the Cyberbullying issue of the Journal of Social Sciences, and has written nearly a hundred articles in academic journals and books. She is the author of Understanding Violence, a standard academic text in the field of child development, biological psychology, and violent criminal behavior, which was released in 2007 in its third edition. She has also written a variety of curricula and educational handouts for communities, all of which are offered to K-12 schools at no charge. Reflecting her interest in educating laypeople as well, Dr. Englander has answered questions in a column for the New York Times (online edition), and she writes the column Bullying Bulletin Board, which is syndicated by Gatehouse Media in hundreds of newspapers nationwide. She has appeared on National Public Radio, Public Broadcasting Service, CBS News, and other media outlets, and has been cited by the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Boston Globe, and many other magazines and newspapers.
