Dieses Thema ist aufgrund der Globalisierung der Märkte für Wissenschaft und Praxis von Bedeutung. Durch die Verlagerung von Produktionsstätten ins Ausland und Übernahmen von ausländischen Unternehmen hat sich die Mitarbeiterstruktur vieler Unternehmen stark verändert. So hatten 1990 noch 62 Prozent aller Mitarbeiter der Siemens AG die deutsche Staatsbürgerschaft. Im Jahr 2007 waren es noch 32 Prozent. Mit 328.200 Mitarbeitern an 1.698 Standorten ist Siemens in vielen Regionen der Welt vertreten. Und auch der Wettbewerb ist internationaler geworden. So treten inländische Unternehmen sowohl auf ausländischen als auch auf inländischen Märkten in Konkurrenz mit ausländischen Unternehmen. Eine Konzentration auf den heimischen Markt, wie es in der Vergangenheit der Fall war, ist nicht mehr möglich. Das zeigt auch der Umsatzanteil der Siemens AG, welcher in Deutschland erzielt wird. Waren es 1995 noch 39 Prozent, so liegt dieser Anteil im Geschäftsbericht von 2007 bei 17 Prozent. Diese Veränderungen der Mitarbeiterstruktur, die Erschließung neuer Märkte und die damit verbundene Vielfalt macht es für die Wirtschaft unausweichlich sich mit dem Thema Diversity zu beschäftigen. So heißt es in den Richtlinien der Siemens AG, dass Diversity "eine unschätzbare Quelle für Talent, Kreativität und Erfahrung" ist. "Sie umfasst die Vielfalt der unterschiedlichen Kulturen, Religionen, Nationalitäten, Hautfarben, ethnischen und gesellschaftlichen Gruppen, der Geschlechter und der Altersgruppen - also alles, was jeden von uns innerhalb der Gesellschaft einzigartig macht."
