Obwohl oft eine Vielzahl von Passanten zu Zeugen solcher Taten wird, greifen die wenigsten dieser Menschen in die jeweilige Situation ein, um dem Opfer oder den Opfern zu helfen. So geschieht es auch am 11. Februar 2011 als sich der Maler- und Lackierermeister Marcel R. zusammen mit einem Kollegen auf dem Heimweg von der Arbeit befindet: In der Berliner U-Bahn-Station "Lichtenberg" werden sie von vier Jugendlichen überfallen. Während sein Kollege fliehen kann, wird Marcel R. von den Tätern brutal zusammengeschlagen. Selbst als er am Boden liegt, treten die jungen Männer weiter auf ihn ein, bis er schließlich ins Koma fällt. Anschließend wird er von seinen Peinigern ausgeraubt. Das Video der Überwachungskamera des U-Bahnhofs dokumentiert dieses Szenario und zeigt darüber hinaus auch Passanten, die den Vorfall ignorieren. Lediglich ein Pärchen leistet Hilfe, indem es die Polizei ruft. Damit half das Pärchen auf indirekte Weise: Bei dieser berichtenden Art der Hilfestellung teilt man einer anderen, qualifizierteren Person seine Beobachtungen mit und überträgt ihr so die Verantwortung. [...] Konträr zu dieser Form von Hilfeverhalten ist der direkte Weg: Dabei hilft man, indem man unmittelbar in die Situation eingreift. [...] Diese Art zu helfen, zeichnet sich dadurch aus, dass sie oftmals bestimmte Fähigkeiten, Wissen und körperliche Kraft voraussetzt und darüber hinaus ein gewisses Gefahrenpotential für den Helfer beinhalten kann (Darley & Latané, 1968). Der zuvor geschilderte Fall von Marcel R. ist nur eins von vielen Beispielen, in denen Menschen zu Zeugen einer Straftat wurden und dennoch nicht einschritten.
