En este estudio histórico regional del Zulia, con aproximaciones biográficas a la figura del Cacique Nigale, se ha intentado acercarse lo más posible, a través de la investigación, al violento tiempo que le tocaría vivir a Nigale, a su etnia indígena zapara y a otros grupos aborígenes, pobladores de la cuenca del Lago de Maracaibo, a su gran resistencia ante la penetración europea de su espacio vital y al terrible etnocidio efectuado por muchos de esos invasores, quienes les robaron el oro, les arrebataron su libertad y los esclavizaron, y casi acabaron con la existencia de aquellas etnias aborígenes de la región lacustre, no solo con unas armas superiores a las suyas, sino también a través del engaño, de la traición y de la alevosía, además de irles arrancando lentamente, su auténtica identidad de pueblo, representada básicamente en la lengua propia que los identificaba y en otros aspectos de su cultura autóctona. Para lograr el propósito básico de esta investigación, de base científica y de finalidad didáctica, dirigida a los niños y jóvenes en especial y a la comunidad venezolana en general, se usará un lenguaje sencillo, en forma de narración y comprensible para cualquier nivel socio-cultural del lector, a pesar de lo crudo de la temática planteada, para lo cual se ha dividido en varios capítulos. El primer capítulo se dedicaría a un leve conocimiento de los pobladores indígenas prehispánicos en la región lacustre, provenientes de las grandes familias: aruacos, caribes y chibchas, destacando, en una forma somera, las características étnicas que los identificaba y sus costumbres socio-culturales fundamentales, para luego emparentarlos con sus descendientes, las cuatro etnias actuales que pueblan el Estado Zulia y una parte de Colombia. En el segundo capítulo, se haría un recorrido panorámico de carácter histórico, por los cien años transcurridos, desde el llamado Descubrimiento o Encuentro de dos culturas, la europea y la americana, efectuado en el Lago de Maracaibo, entonces una auténtica alberca cristalina, el 24 de agosto de 1499 y aquel año de 1598, con la aparición pública de Nigale como cacique de la etnia zapara, para más tarde, unificar y encabezar la gran resistencia aborigen de la cuenca lacustre. Ese primer encuentro doble de las culturas, de los europeos con los indígenas americanos, muy pronto se iba a convertir en triple, al añadirles el componente negro, con el vergonzante comercio de naturales del continente africano, para convertirlos en esclavos, en las nuevas tierras americanas. Al ir incursionando en el tiempo del recorrido histórico, se intentará seguir la extensa ruta de la justa resistencia indígena, desde el momento inicial del Encuentro hasta llegar al atroz etnocidio, efectuado por muchos de aquellos conquistadores europeos, durante la llamada conquista, colonización y poblamiento, en este caso, de la cuenca del Lago de Maracaibo, ubicada en la denominada Tierra Firme, crímenes perpetuados a pesar de las concepciones morales y de las numerosas protecciones jurídicas de los monarcas hispanos, del propio papado y sobre todo, de la abnegada labor de los misioneros. Para el abordamiento de un tema tan polémico, debería intentarse su estudio con una especial sensatez, a pesar de lo difícil, sin dejarse dominar por el apasionamiento ideológico, emocional o sentimental, sino tratando de entender la mentalidad, tan diferente a la actual, de aquellos hombres europeos del siglo XVI, quienes venían de la oscuridad de la época medieval y estaban en el camino, de apenas despertar al deslumbrador Renacimiento.
