Storie di formazione e crescita, In Italia, oggi. Immagini di gente comune che affolla i nostri giorni, nelle Università, nei concerti, nelle agenzie turistiche, nelle case, nei bar, al lavoro. E che raramente entrano nelle statistiche o fanno notizia nei giornali e TV. La malattia e la morte della madre accelerano prepotentemente tutto per Tommaso, che in una notte diventa adulto. Il sogno iniziale di affermarsi come batterista, perseguito con determinazione e raggiunto da Luca, viene sostituito da una realtà più coinvolgente: la paternità. Giulia non sa mai come comportarsi, scappa, non sa darsi risposte, cerca ragazzi che la meritino e alla fine trova l'altruismo. Sandra, solitaria, salutista, vedova, è alla ricerca di un amico cui confidarsi. Carlotta amante del jazz e del cinema si è chiusa in una bolla per non essere ferita, cerca l'amore ma si proibisce di innamorarsi. Paolo si sente artista e il suo orizzonte è il mondo della giornata. Per lui l'arte è ricerca sull'improvvisazione e non importa il pensiero ma solo il risultato. Riccardo perfetto pianificatore della sua vita e di quella di Lucia, coinvolto nella crisi dei genitori, riconosce che ci si può anche sbagliare. Il racconto è suddiviso in quattro parti: l'insegna, il bancone, la carta, il caffè e un epilogo. Il caffè come luogo di incontri e bevanda nelle molte varianti di degustazione o rifiuto è il leitmotiv che accomuna i protagonisti. Chi ha scelto i tasselli per questo racconto a mosaico è Dante, inquieto e dibattuto tra amore e innamoramento, tra sogno e realtà che poi trova un sereno equilibrio nella scrittura.
