Thomas Devaney's CALAMITY JANE is a beautiful contradiction. Based on the life and times of the feminist icon, this opera- in-verse is a study in a particular kind of bad-ass western interior-fierce, scared, grief-stricken, adventurous, and lovelorn. The individual pieces are moving as lyric poetry per se, but when read as an operatic series, they take on the historical heft of the epic.
