El proposito de incorporar a los campesinos en el relato historico ha suscitado nuevos debates entre aquellos historiadores que contemplan al campesinado como una figura del pasado, condenada a la extincion, y los que se resisten a aceptar tal augurio. En la actualidad, cerca de la mitad de la poblacion mundial es o convive en sociedades campesinas y su desaparicion no parece tan evidente ante los obstaculos que han encontrado estos paises para imitar el modelo de industrializacion de los paises ricos o del norte. Ademas, el surgimiento de un nuevo brote de movimientos campesinos e indigenas que luchan por el acceso a la tierra, la reforma agraria, el control del proceso productivo, la defensa de derechos comunitarios o la autonomia politica, invita a preguntarse por las causas de su pervivencia mas que por las de su desaparicion. Este libro quiere contribuir a tal reflexion a traves del analisis de la conflictividad social en el mundo campesino desde la irrupcion de los procesos de modernizacion politica y economica en el campo hasta nuestros dias. La violencia en el periodo contemporaneo ha estado intimamente relacionada con los cambios que han transformado a las sociedades campesinas. La consolidacion de los estados liberales y la mercantilizacion de las economias transformaron completamente la fisonomia de las sociedades tradicionales campesinas y provocaron dilatados procesos de politizacion, nacionalizacion, revolucion, exodo rural y urbanizacion. En aquellos paises donde este desarrollo no ha logrado imponerse, el campesinado parece haber sido condenado al empobrecimiento. La fabula del progreso universal parece haber marginado al campesinado. Este libro se intenta entender el amplio proceso desde una perspectiva historica y aportar algo de luz a una de las mayores encrucijadas a las que se enfrenta el desarrollo global, la cuestion agraria y campesina.
