Dans les premières semaines de la guerre la presse parla abondamment de l'utilisation par les Allemands d'une pièce d'artillerie fantastique - un obusier d'un calibre de 42 cm - capable de détruire n'importe quelle fortification. Cet énorme obusier, les ouvriers de l'usine d'Essen qui l'avaient fabriqué, le baptisèrent Bertha en hommage à leur patronne Bertha Krupp. Mais bientôt Bertha se tut car elle était inadaptée à la nouvelle forme de guerre, la guerre de tranchées. Cependant son nom s'était, en quelque sorte, gravé durablement dans les mémoires françaises. Et, lorsque à la fin de 1915, de gros obus vinrent meurtrir Compiègne et Villers-Cotterêts, les populations de ces villes, attribuèrent ces tirs à Bertha. Or, ce n'était pas Bertha qui tirait, c'était Max, le long Max (Lange Max). Bien abrité loin derrière la ligne de front et pouvant propulser son obus à 20 km au-delà de celle-ci, Max n'était en rien comparable à l'obusier dont la portée était inférieure à dix kilomètres. D'autres Max furent installés par la suite dont celui de Chuignes en 1918 . Et puis il y eut aussi, bien sûr, le canon qui tirait sur Paris (Pariser kanone); et, pour les Parisiens, un canon capable de tirer à une telle distance ne pouvait être qu'une Bertha, même une Grosse Bertha! que les caricaturistes représentèrent sous l'aspect d'une femme nécessairement grosse et moche puisqu'elle était boche. La plupart des Français ignorèrent toujours que ces canons puissants étaient des canons de marine adaptés à une utilisation terrestre. Comment imaginer des canons de marine à cent kilomètres ou plus des côtes, au milieu de terres à blé et à betterave ? On continua de les appeler Bertha et un siècle plus tard le nom demeure toujours vivace. Même les Australiens se mirent à nommer ainsi les gros canons qu'ils avaient capturés, distinguant cependant Big Bertha et Little Bertha. La lecture de cet ouvrage ne fera certainement pas disparaître le nom impropre de Bertha, trop bien ancré dans la mémo
