Capitale de la douleur (1926) est le premier recueil de Paul Eluard, il parait en 1926. Ce recueil comprend une centaine de poèmes, dont les deux tiers avaient déjà été publiés dans des plaquettes antérieures. Le titre originel prévu était "L'art d'être malheureux" mais au dernier moment Eluard lui substitua "Capitale de la douleur". Capitale de la douleur est un recueil surréaliste. Il est composé de quatre parties où alternent vers et prose. Capitale de la douleur rassemble en effet deux plaquettes antérieures, Répétitions, parue en 1922 Au Sans Pareil, et Mourir de ne pas mourir, publiée en 1924 par la NRF, auxquelles sont joints deux ensembles partiellement inédits Les petits justes et Nouveaux poèmes . Ces quatre parties correspondent à trois recueils: Les petits justes appartenaient en effet à Mourir de ne pas mourir; les six poèmes ont été étoffés de cinq autres pour constituer un ensemble de onze textes numérotés (le cinq premiers et le onzième étaient sans numérotation dans le recueil de 1924); ils sont suivis des Nouveaux poèmes, dont plusieurs sont parus en revue ou catalogues d'exposition en 1925-1926, et dont neuf ont été publiés en recueil: cinq dans Les Nécessités de la vie, en 1921 ( Baigneuse du clair au sombre, Cachée, Les noms: Chéri-Bibi, Gaston Leroux, Jour de tout et Le grand jour ), et quatre dans Au défaut du silence, en 1925 ( Ta chevelure d'oranges..., Les Lumières dictées..., Ta bouche aux lèvres d'or... et Elle est... ) Aux 35 poèmes de Répétitions s'ajoutent les 22 poèmes de Mourir de ne pas mourir, les 11 textes des Petits justes et les 45 Nouveaux poèmes . Cette Capitale dont il est question tout au long du recueil c'est Paris où réside le poète avec Gala, son épouse, qu'il aime mais qui le fait tant souffrir.
