Ésta es la tercera y última parte de una novela que tiene como fondo la vida de dos personajes reales: John Caradoc y Joaquina Plana. Él es un aristócrata inglés que interviene en episodios históricos claves para el Imperio Británico. Utiliza para ello sus habilidades galantes. Joaquina es una humilde murciana que por azares de la vida termina trabajando en un café cantante de Cartagena. El romance se produce en una situación crítica para Caradoc en la que es ayudado por Joaquina. Hay varias tramas argumentales. La principal es el romance. Otra es la desaparición en extrañas circunstancias del cuadro del primer Barón Howden, padre del protagonista, obra de Lawrence, y propiedad de la familia Caradoc Plana.
En esta tercera parte empezamos con un viaje en el que él quiere dar respuesta a los anhelos de ella al tiempo que le muestra una realidad que no conoce.
A partir de ello, una nueva Joaquina aparece. Percibimos la epifanía de una nueva mujer ilustrada con una nueva mentalidad que nace a partir del tren, de los viajes y de las gentes que conoce en él. También hay un nuevo mundo social que se abre también ante ella y que desconocía, el de la clase dominante en Murcia. La cuestión es ahora cómo puede aprovecharse de él, utilizando todo lo que aprende y la influencia que adquiere para proyectarlo sobre en su futuro y sobre su descendencia. Lo hace poseída de esos instintos que rigen el comportamiento más primario de los humanos.
En fin, otras cuestiones que se abordan tienen que ver con el patrimonio que constituye La Torre y las riquezas que a ella vinieron. En relación con esa cuestión y con el objeto sin duda más valioso de ese patrimonio, hemos asistido a una cadena de hechos con el resultado de dos muertos en extrañas circunstancias y con un feo asunto de por medio protagonizado por una trama de tráfico en obras de arte durante el boom de la construcción de los años setenta. A esa cuestión también se pone fin en este tercer volumen. Se trata de la desaparición de un cuadro de gran valor, del retrato de primer barón Howden realizado por Thomas Lawrence. Asistiremos a un inesperado desenlace de ese asunto.
Todo ello, en conjunto, queremos que sea como un fresco puesto ante los ojos del lector de manera que cada uno de los elementos que constituyen ese fresco formen una cohesionada urdimbre y todos ellos tienen un vínculo más o menos intenso con los conflictos reales, con los asuntos del alma o de los sentimientos, que se desatan en el seno de un amor complejo como es el de Caradoc y Joaquina.
En el ánimo del autor no está dar respuesta a estos conflictos y situaciones, respuesta que por demás no posee o simplemente no existe. Simplemente nos pone ante ellos.
