About the Book

Carlos Fraticelli, as seen through the eyes of the grandson he never met is a partial memoir which begins with my childhood disinterest in family history, and moves from college student curiosity about my grandfather, to adult fascination with his poetry and family. My story frames how I came to learn about Carlos, piece together the puzzle of his complex life, many many years after his death. Readers with an interest in history, poetry, adventure, life struggles and family dynamics will find this story both engaging and revealing. It is my fervent hope that you will be sensitized to the positive impact that stories of family relationships, grief and sorrow, ethnic heritage and immigration can have on the development of empathy and a sense of kinship.
About the Author: ABOUT BEN FRATICELLI I was born in Hayward, California, the fourth of seven children, and have lived all but nine years of my life in the San Francisco Bay Area. Both my parents were Puerto Rican, and their respective families were part of a group that was recruited by the sugar cane companies of Hawaii in 1901. My father, who was born in Puerto Rico, was three when he arrived in Hawaii. He came to California when he was 18 years old. My mother was born in Hawaii and came to the Hayward area in 1914, where she later met and married my father. One unique feature of the book is the chronological framework that highlights a growing awareness of my grandfather, whom I first came to know through negative descriptions in childhood. In subsequent decades I encountered details of the Corsican origin of the Fraticelli families in Puerto Rico, stories about the migration to Hawaii in 1901, and ultimately some facts surrounding his legacy as a gifted poet. This book is not about poetry. It is about the poet, and, in a broader sense, about me. The defining characteristics of writing this book are heightened appreciation and respect for my Fraticelli heritage, and development of a more complete identity as Puerto Rican.
