Wilamowitz, le plus fameux des philologues allemands, dit de la poesie latine en general qu'elle n'atteint son sommet que lorsqu'elle acquiert dans les nouvelles formes rythmiques chretiennes une richesse que les Romains n'ont jamais possedee. Henry Spitzmuller le sait bien lorsqu'il publie en 1971 un livre magistral et monumental, une somme bilingue de poesie latine chretienne couvrant la totalite du Moyen Age - un millenaire et quart. De ce livre de reference, meme cinquante ans plus tard, il n'existe pour le lecteur francais aucun equivalent. Aucune publication n'a, comme celle-ci, donne acces a la vastitude poetique et litteraire de ce premier millenaire. Ces 1200 ans de poesie, du IIIe siecle au XVe, commencent a Rome avec le christianisme, dans cette langue latine qui est le socle de la notre. L'ouvrage edite par Spitzmuller ne comble pas seulement une lacune, mais il efface un gouffre d'ignorance. Des sa parution l'on ne cessa de s'y referer. De nombreux auteurs et de nombreuses oevres ne se trouvent en effet qu'ici. On peut lire ce volume aussi bien en esthete qu'en mystique, aussi bien en philosophe qu'en historien. Des figures centrales le composent qui, reduites a leurs travaux theoriques par un siecle partisan, ne purent donc apparaitre comme etant aussi les grands ecrivains et poetes de leur temps: saint Ambroise et saint Augustin, Lactance, Boece, Commodien, Prudence, Arator et le pape saint Gregoire le Grand (qui donna son nom au chant gregorien ), mais egalement Bede le Venerable, saint Pierre Damien, saint Anselme, Abelard, saint Bernard, sainte Hildegarde, Adam de Saint-Victor, Alain de Lille, Thomas de Celano, saint Bonaventure, saint Thomas, Jacopone da Todi, Thomas a Kempis, Savonarole, Pic de la Mirandole... Au total ce sont cent-seize ecrivains medievaux dont on decouvre l'oeuvre poetique: des auteurs celebres que l'on n'a pas encore lus, aussi bien que des auteurs inconnus dont, sans le savoir, l'on a deja entendu les pages car elles font partie du patrimoine de l'humanite. S'ajoute a cela un large ensemble de textes anonymes transmis par la tradition populaire ou liturgique, et qui, des Hymnes de Paques du Ve siecle aux Cantiques de Noel du XVe en passant par la Lamentation de l'ame damnee ou le Rythme pour le jour du Sabbat eternel, sont autant de chefs-d'oeuvre dont l'existence impregne l'histoire litteraire tout autant que la vie de la liturgie contemporaine. Une telle somme de poesie ne fut pas complete si elle n'etait irreprochablement editee par Spitzmuller: pedagogiquement annote et commente, le volume reserve deux-cents pages aux divers eclaircissements historiques ainsi qu'aux notices biographiques de chacun des auteurs. En depit du tresor qu'il constitue a lui seul, ce livre magnifique demeurait parfaitement introuvable. A ceux qui vont decouvrir ce grand-oeuvre comme a tous ceux qui l'attendaient depuis longtemps, cette nouvelle edition fera saisir, peut-etre, la facon dont certains rares ouvrages peuvent devenir le livre d'une vie.
