Dev'essere stato il nome che mi ha fatto prendere quella casetta in cima alla collina. Era perlopiù vista, ma il titolo - integrato dall'affitto molto basso - suggeriva il primo verso di una bellissima poesia. Nessuno sa chi abbia iniziato l'usanza o quando, ma per anni sconosciuti una luce notturna era stata tenuta accesa in una vecchia lanterna di bronzo malandata che oscillava proprio sopra la mia porta di casa. Nelle nebbie del primo mattino il basso edificio bianco sembrava fatto di sogni; ma la minuscola fiamma, scivolando oltre le basse grondaie ricurve, brillava lontano in mare e alla sua luce i marinai giapponesi, aggirando la punta rocciosa della Lingua dei Draghi nelle loro vecchie giunche, si diressero verso casa e riposo. Per loro era un faro di benvenuto. Hanno chiamato il posto "La casa della stella nebbiosa". In esso per trent'anni ho faticato, insegnato e sognato. Da esso ho visto passare le navi di potenti nazioni, alcune in missione di pace; alcuni per cambiare la mappa del mondo. Attraverso le sue finestre ho visto la gloria di Dio nei tramonti e la tenerezza del Suo amore nelle albe. Le colline rosa della primavera e il cremisi dell'autunno sono venute e se ne sono andate, e attraverso i portali scolpiti che segnano l'ingresso a casa mia hanno vagato i relitti e le acque del mondo. Sono venuti per un riparo, per il cibo, per curiosità e talvolta perché devono farlo, finché non ho guadagnato il mio titolo di matrigna chiara per metà dei randagi e dei randagi d'Oriente. Una volta era un generale cinese, in cerca di sicurezza da una folla. Quindi era un russo dall'aspetto feroce sospettato come spia e, quando perquisito, si è scoperto che era una ragazza spaventata, che cercava il suo amore tra i prigionieri di guerra. Gli alti, i bassi, i miti e gli impertinenti, i bambini smarriti, i pellegrini che chiedono l'elemosina e i gatti senza coda - tutti prima o poi hanno trovato la loro strada attraverso i miei cancelli e sono usciti di nuovo, toccando a malapena i margini esterni della mia vita domestica. Ma le cose non hanno mai cominciato ad accadermi davvero, voglio dire cose che contavano davvero, fino all'arrivo di Jane Grey. Dopodiché sembrava che non si sarebbero mai fermati.
