The Lady of Cao was a mighty woman from ancient Peru. She belonged to the political and religious elite of the Mochica culture, inhabitants of the northern coast of Peru. She may even have been considered a demi-goddess: Tattoed images of spiders, snakes, geometrical figures, and animals such as the jaguar covered her forearms, hands, and feet. Moreover, the discovery of her tomb in 2005 by archaeologist Régulo Franco broke with the notion that only men had ruled ancient Peru.
