Während Gegner des Mindestlohns auf die neoklassische Theorie verweisen, betonen stattdessen die Befürworter des Mindestlohns die Richtigkeit der keynesianischen Theorie. Die neoklassische Theorie untersucht das Zustandekommen von Tauschbeziehungen einzelner Anbieter und Nachfrager. Der Ort, an welchem diese Tauschgeschäfte geschlossen werden, wird als Markt bezeichnet. Auf einem Arbeitsmarkt bieten Haushalte ihre Arbeitskraft an und Unternehmen fragen diese Arbeitskraft nach. In der Neoklassik werden die Nachfrage und das Angebot nach Arbeit als Kurve in einem Koordinatensystem dargestellt. Das Angebot hat dabei eine positive und die Nachfrage eine negative Steigung. Der Schnittpunkt bestimmt den Lohn und die Menge an Arbeitsplätzen, die im Gleichgewicht zur Verfügung stehen. Der Lohn muss dabei flexibel sein um nach einer Störung des Marktes wieder zu einem Gleichgewicht zu gelangen. Ein gesetzlicher Mindestlohn würde genau das verhindern. Der Arbeitsmarkt wird dann daran gehindert zu einem Gleichgewicht zurück zu gelangen und es entsteht Arbeitslosigkeit. Im keynesianischen Modell hingegen verursacht ein Mindestlohn eine Steigerung der Einkommen derer, die unter dem Mindestlohn verdient haben. Durch das zusätzliche Einkommen steigt der Konsum und die Unternehmen müssen mehr investieren und produzieren um dem steigenden Konsum gerecht zu werden. Zusätzlich müssen sie weitere Mitarbeiter einstellen und deswegen werden mehr Arbeiter beschäftigt als vor der Einführung des Mindestlohns. Aktuell besteht kein gesetzlicher Mindestlohn in Deutschland. Einzelne Branchen haben tariflich geregelte Mindestentgelte, die regionale Unterschiede aufweisen. Ein gesetzlicher Min
