Archie Anderson vient d'être promu dans les services de la Criminelle à Perth, Australie-Occidentale. Affecté au Bureau des personnes disparues, il est aussitôt expédié dans la région sauvage de Goldfields-Esperance pour enquêter sur la disparition d'une responsable aborigène fichée comme activiste. Bientôt, trois nouveaux Aborigènes sont portés disparus. L'enquête se corse encore lorsqu'Archie se retrouve face à de curieux mercenaires supposés protéger une équipe de scientifiques, spécialistes de l'environnement, mais dont l'attitude semble fort peu protocolaire. Rien n'est simplifié par sa rencontre avec la séduisante Barbara dont les intentions ne sont pas toujours limpides..

Tout frais promu, Archie Anderson est affecté au bureau des personnes disparues. Il part à la recherche d'une figure maîtresse du peuple aborigène. Dans "Le chant des galahs" de Pascal Vatinel, le racisme et la violence font de la vie d'Archie un cauchemar. Jeune, brillant, un peu coincé, Archie est un solitaire. Fils d'un fermier chassé de sa terre au profit des aborigènes, il va être confronté à ce peuple dans une région aride, loin de celle où il est né. Dans la sauvage, sèche et poussiéreuse région de Goldfields-Esperance la chape de plomb du soleil n'est rien comparée à celle du silence. Les disparitions se multiplient, les chefs d'Anderson le pressent de boucler l'enquête et le patron de la police locale guette ses faux pas. C'est la rebelle Barbara qui entraîne Archie dans une guerre contre des racistes et des profiteurs armés jusqu'aux dents. Contre toute attente un policier aborigène et un guide peu bavard seront les seuls co-équipiers sur qui compter. Entre amour, amitiés et deuils, Archie sait désormais que la perte de la culture aborigène serait lourde pour l'Humanité.
