La Renommée, ce monstre infatigable, du même vol dont elle a touché les ruines des empires, s'arrête à cette chose aimable, s'y pose un moment; elle en revient, comme la colombe, avec le rameau. Dans les temps modernes, si la poésie proprement dite a fait défaut à ce genre de tradition, le roman n'a pas cessé; sous une forme ou sous une autre, certaines douces figures ont gardé le privilège de servir d'entretien aux générations et aux jeunesses successives. Que dire d'Héloïse ? qu'ajouter à ce que réveille le nom de La Vallière ? Vers 1663, il entra dans la politique de Louis XIV de secourir le Portugal contre l'Espagne, mais de le secourir indirectement; on fournit sous main des subsides, on favorisa des levées, une foule de volontaires y coururent. Entre cette petite armée, commandée par Schomberg, et la pauvre armée espagnole qui lui disputait le terrain, il y eut là, chaque été, bien des marches et des contre-marches de peu de résultat, bien des escarmouches et de petits combats, parmi lesquels, je crois, une victoire. Qui donc s'en soucie aujourd'hui ? Mais le lecteur curieux qui ne veut que son charme ne peut s'empêcher de dire que tout cela a été bon, puisque les Lettres de la Religieuse portugaise en devaient naître..."
