Das Erstlingswerk der ehemaligen TV Moderatorin setzt sich monatelang an der Spitze der Bestsellerlisten fest und ist sowohl in den Printmedien als auch im Fernsehen nahezu omnipräsent. Die Frage woher der Erfolg des Romans kommt, reiht sich hinter verschiedenen interpretatorischen Auslegungen um einen feministischen Befreiungsschlag oder um die kalkulierte Provokation der aufmerksamkeitsheischenden Ex Moderatorin ein, wobei auch die autobiografische Lesart des Romans in zahlreichen Rezeptionen aufgetaucht. Fakt ist, dass "Feuchtgebiete" eine öffentliche Debatte in Gang gebracht hat. In dieser Arbeit wird darauf eingegangen, ob es sich dabei um einen Skandal handelt, der durch das mediale Inszenieren der Autorin forciert worden ist oder ob durch die Intention der Autorin ein Plädoyer gegen Schönheitsdiktat und Sauberkeitswahn zu verfassen, dass an Explizität nichts zu wünschen übrig lässt letzte Tabus der Neuzeit hinsichtlich Sexualität und Hygiene gebrochen werden. Vorangestellt an diese Untersuchung sind Definitionen zu Tabu und Skandal, die eine begriffliche Basis bieten sollen. Eine Annäherung an die (vermeintlichen) Tabus in "Feuchtgebiete" soll durch die Erläuterung der Grundstruktur des Romans erfolgen, mit der Intention die Funktionsweise des Romans zu erklären. Des Weiteren sollen mögliche Tabus identifiziert werden. "Vermeintlich" ist vorangestellt, da die Tabus in Charlotte Roches Erstlingswerk nicht ohne den Kontext funktionieren bzw. nicht ohne ihre mediale Reaktion.
