Un jour - c'était avant la guerre -, on m'apprit que le duc de Castièvre venait d'acheter le fameux château de Sirvoise. Et, quelques semaines après, par une lettre scellée à ses armoiries, M. de Castièvre me conviait à le rejoindre dans sa nouvelle résidence. Ma femme s'est mis en tête que je me porte mal, écrivait le duc, et que vos soins me sont nécessaires. Il me semble pourtant que ma santé ne laisse rien à désirer. Mais vous me voyez trop heureux de pouvoir satisfaire, avec le désir de la duchesse, la grande envie que j'ai de vous recevoir ici. Venez. Mon amitié pour lui et la connaissance que j'avais acquise de son tempérament nerveux - pour ne pas dire plus - me firent un devoir de répondre à son appel. Je décidai de lui consacrer mes vacances.
About the Author: Maurice Renard, né le 28 février 1875 à Châlons-sur-Marne et mort le 18 novembre 1939 à Rochefort, est un écrivain français, spécialisé dans le fantastique, la science-fiction et le roman policier. Biographie S'il naît à Châlons-sur-Marne, au 7 rue du Grenier-au-Sel, dans une famille bourgeoise, c'est à Reims, où son père, magistrat, a été nommé président du tribunal d'instance en 1877, que Maurice Renard passe son enfance. Son grand-père Pierre Édouard Renard était également haut magistrat, ainsi que maire d'Épernay. L'enfance de Maurice est rythmée par des séjours d'été à Hermonville, où ses grands-parents possèdent le château Saint-Rémy (détruit en 1918), et où la famille occupe dans le vaste parc un petit pavillon, le clos Saint-Vincent. Seul garçon et de loin le benjamin de trois enfants, il est un enfant solitaire, choyé par ses parents, marqué par ses lectures - Charles Dickens, Edgar Poe notamment - et par les mannequins du magasin de bonneterie de ses grands-parents à Reims. Fin 1886, Maurice Renard est interne de l'École Monge, 145 boulevard Malesherbes à Paris, avant de revenir à Reims en 1892, au collège des Bons-Enfants. En 1894, il obtient son baccalauréat en lettres et en philosophie. Il effectue trois années de service militaire à Reims (1896-1899) avec le grade de maréchal des logis, au cours desquelles il découvre Herbert George Wells. En 1899, il s'installe à Paris et fait des études de droit qu'il abandonne bientôt pour se consacrer à la littérature. Il publie un hommage à Victor Hugo, lu à la Comédie-Française. Puis, sous le pseudonyme de Vincent Saint-Vincent (il choisit ce pseudonyme pour ne pas être confondu avec Jules Renard, mais y renonce en découvrant qu'il s'agit d'un patronyme réel), il publie son premier recueil de contes Fantômes et fantoches en 1905, fruit d'inspirations diverses, où l'on note l'influence de Herbert George Wells, dans Les vacances de monsieur Dupont, (un Monde perdu avant la lettre).
