About the Book

El Chilam Balam de Chumayel (o el libro del adivino de las cosas ocultas) es una colección de libros escritos en lengua maya, por personajes anónimos, durante los siglos XVI y XVII, en la península de Yucatán.

Los libros del Chilam Balam relatan hechos y circunstancias históricas de la civilización maya antes de la conquista española.

Durante la época colonial, los misioneros católicos españoles destruyeron la mayor parte de los escritos de la religión maya, al considerar que tales memorias eran nocivas para la catequización de los mayas.

Los mayas escribieron los libros del Chilam Balam después de la conquista, presuntamente por el interés de los colonizadores, por lo que en su redacción se nota ya la influencia de la cultura española, sobre todo en materia religiosa.

Estos libros contienen textos de diferentes épocas y estilos, con un contenido religioso profético, médico e histórico, principalmente cronológico. Su nombre deriva del de un sacerdote, Chilam Balam.

Estos textos, traducidos por Antonio Mediz Bolio, pretendieron contener los secretos de los mayas y son una fuente importante para el conocimiento de la religión, historia, folklore, medicina, y astronomía de dicha cultura.

Se supone que hubo más libros en la colección de Chilam Balam (que se denominaron con los nombres de los pueblos en que los escribieron), pero solo unos pocos sobrevivieron hasta hoy.

El Chilam Balam de Chumayel, es quizá el más importante de todos.

Balam es el nombre más famoso de los chilames que vinieron antes de la venida de los europeos al continente. Es un nombre de familia pero significa brujo o mago. Asimismo Chilam o Chilán es el título que se daba a los oráculos que interpretaban los libros y la voluntad de los Dioses.

También Chilam significa el que es boca y Balam es, a su vez, Jaguar. Por lo que Chilam Balam se puede traducir como Jaguar acostado en alusión a un Dios maya encarnado en este felino.
