About the Author: Maksim Gorky (1868-1936) became one of the most trenchant observers of both the promises and moral dangers of revolution in Russia. He was forced to flee the country twice--once in 1906, as a prominent opponent of the tsarist regime, and again in 1921, as a vocal critic of the Bolshevik government. He began a series of extended visits to the Soviet Union in 1928, returning permanently in 1933. Graham Hettlinger's most recent book of translations was The Collected Stories of Ivan Bunin. He works in the Office of International Programs at Georgetown University.
