Questo lavoro prosegue un percorso avviato da Eric Khler e Cesare Segre, che hanno proposto un opportuno ripensamento delle categorie di realismo, realta e idealizzazione nel e del romanzo medievale, offrendo spunti decisivi per superare il suo inadeguato inquadramento nelle teorie classiche del realismo letterario. Lo studio analitico di aspetti caratterizzanti dei romanzi di Chretien de Troyes, che fissano in larga misura i parametri del genere, conferma senza meno che la distanza tra il romanzo cavalleresco medievale e quello cosiddetto realista moderno deve essere accorciata, o meglio ancora ripensata in termi diversi da quelli che la critica letteraria ha fin qui saputo elaborare. Inoltre, o forse soprattutto, una spiegazione del motivo per cui il lettore trovi la realta della sua vita rispecchiata in un romanzo dai tempi di Chretien de Troyes ad oggi, e sempre piu o meno nella stessa maniera, richiede un salto in avanti rispetto agli approcci critici tradizionali. Di sicuro lo studio di analogie e differenze nel modo in cui le varie opere delineano una continuita spazio-temporale, veicolano informazioni attraverso il dialogo, presentano o meno la sincronica concomitanza di eventi piu o meno prodigiosi, ricorrono al meraviglioso per mistificare la banalita del male o riempiono i vuoti del non-raccontato per aderire adeguatamente ai codici del genere non offre una risposta a questa domanda. Dunque l' indagine sul realismo romanzesco e appena cominciata e per proseguirla si dovra verosimilmente indagare la molteplicita di piani di verita che verificano e al contempo realizzano la realta all' interno del sistema di genere. Uno di essi, forse il piu importante, concerne la verita delle emozioni dei personaggi, alla quale Chretien de Troyes fa apertamente riferimento nel prologo del Chevalier au lion, ma questo e l' argomento di un altro libro, tutto ancora da scrivere.
