Als das sich mitten im Kulturkampf befindliche Deutschland Ende 1873 auf die Wahl zum Zweiten Reichstag zusteuerte, erreichte die Redaktion des Volksstaats der Brief eines aufgebrachten Kaplans namens Wilhelm Hüffe. Hüffe beschwerte sich darüber, dass die Sozialisten die Katholische Kirche mit derselben Vehemenz angriffen wie die Liberalen und Bismarck. Der Brief hätte im Papierkorb landen können, doch tatsächlich wurde er abgedruckt und von Bebel als relevent genug erachtet, um eine längere Gegendarstellung auszuarbeiten. Auf diese Weise schuf er eine der bedeutendsten Streitschriften des Atheismus in deutscher Sprache, die in der Erkenntnis endet: "Der sogenannte gute Kern im Christenthum, den Sie, aber nicht ich darin finde, ist nicht christlich, sondern allgemein menschlich, und was das Christenthum eigentlich bildet, der Lehren= und Dogmenkram, ist der Menschheit feindlich."
About the Author: August Bebel wurde 1840 als Sohn eines aus Großpolen stammenden Vaters und einer hessischen Mutter in Köln-Deutz geboren. Da ihn die Suche nach Arbeit nach Sachsen verschlug, wurde er in die Leipziger Auseinandersetzungen um den Aufbau einer deutschen Arbeiterbewegung hineingezogen, wobei er an der Seite Wilhelm Liebknechts Position gegen Ferdinand Lassalle bezog. Seit seiner Parteinahme für die Pariser Commune im Reichstag 1871 zählte er zu den bekanntesten und seit dem Erscheinen von "Die Frau und der Sozialismus" zu den geachtetsten Politikern Deutschlands. 1913 verstarb er in der Schweiz. Wilhelm Hohoff wurde 1848 im sauerländischen Medebach geboren. Innerhalb des katholischen Klerus zählte er zu einer Minderheit, die zwar in wirtschaftspolitischen Fragen eine Kooperation mit den Sozialisten für möglich hielt, darüber hinaus aber auch die unüberbrückbaren Gegensätze in (a)religiöser Hinsicht wahrnahm. Bebel sollte ihn daher später als "halbe[n] Gesinnungsverwandte[n]" bezeichnen. 1923 starb Hohoff in Paderborn.
