About the Book

Christmas Poems is the seventh volume of poetry written by Frances Sydnor Tehie. These poems were chosen because of the special messages they convey about the Christmas season, and what it means to all of us. These spiritual poems celebrate the meaning of the birth of Christ and the special traditions of the Christmas holidays, and will appeal to people of all ages and religious denominations because of their universal message of hope in what can be a bleak and unfeeling world
About the Author: Frances Sydnor Tehie (1926-2003) won over 65 awards in national poetry contests during her lifetime. Born in Jefferson City, TN, she attended Carson-Newman College, where her father was an English professor and Shakespearean scholar, and then went on to the University of Tennesee in Knoxvile where she obtained her M.A. in English. She taught high-school English to students in Pruden, Kentucky and in Tennessee, and then began teaching college-level English at Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, VA. In the late 1950s/early 1960s, she took a teaching job at Monmouth College in Long Branch, NJ, where she met John Tichy Tehie, whom she married in 1962. They had one daughter, Janice, who, with her mother's close friend Jeanne McIlvaine, has been publishing her Frances's poetry since her death one day before her 77th birthday, on April 15, 2003. Frances found the extraordinary in everyday events, such as the sun shining after the rain or flowers emerging after a hard winter. Despite the difficulties in her life, including having clubfoot as a child, she remained optimistic and hopeful, finding joy and inspiration in events that others would consider insignificant or mundane. The changing of the seasons, hearing a cardinal sing or alight on a branch, seeing the lilacs bloom every spring--these were what filled her with delight and gave her hope and strength to conquer life's difficulties. Widely hailed as a "lyrical poet", Frances Sydnor Tehie won over 65 poetry awards during her lifetime, and was widely published in LYRIC, ORPHEUS LUTE, GOOD HOUSEKEEPING, FAMILY CIRCLE and other publications.
