Herrscherbilder im Mittelalter, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Bilder sind besetzt mit Zeichen. Diese gilt es zu entschlüsseln und zu verstehen, will man die gesamte Darstellung in ihrem Kontext begreifen. Die Schwierigkeit liegt darin, dass Zeichen ihre Bedeutung verändern können oder der Sinn gar vergessen wird. Die Darstellung kann dann nicht mehr (richtig) gelesen werden. Die vorliegende Arbeit widmet sich der Pariser Elfenbeintafel, auf der Otto II. und Theophanu durch Christus gesegnet werden. Diese Tafel gehört zu den zahlreichen Beispielen von Herrscherdarstellungen im Mittelalter. Obwohl schon einige Erkenntnisse als gesichert angesehen werden können, wirft diese Tafel noch einige Fragen auf. Es gilt herauszufinden, welche Fragen noch gar nicht gestellt wurden - und warum. Interessant ist an dieser Stelle die Frage nach den Inschriften, da gerade sie besonderen Anlass zu Diskussionen bieten. Neue Fragen an sie zu richten bedeutet, neue Antworten zu erhalten und möglicherweise neue Interpretationen und Kontextualisierungen vorzunehmen. Besonders die Theophanu zugeordneten Inschriften sind Gegenstand vieler Diskussionen. Es existieren verschiedene Sichtweisen, bei denen sowohl eine weibliche Form ihres Titels gesehen wird, als auch das männliche Genus . Mittlerweile wird die maskuline Form der Titulatur als Faktum betrachtet. Die Frage nach dem warum scheint bisher jedoch noch nicht gestellt worden zu sein. Die Untersuchung konzentriert sich auf das Beispiel dieser Elfenbeintafel, um einen Eindruck zu vermitteln, wie Herrscherdarstellungen aussehen konnten, in welchem Kontext sie standen und welche Intentionen mit ihnen verbunden waren.
