Assis chez lui dans son hemicycle, Quintus Mucius Scevola raconte a ses familiers la visite qu'il rendit a son beau-pere Lelius en 129 avant Jesus-Christ. L'occasion de ce recit est la lutte qui oppose en 88 avant J.-C. le consul Quintus Pompeius Rufus et le tribun de la Plebe Sulpicius, amis et allies jusque la. Qu'est-ce que l'amitie? Quelles sont ses origines et comment la preserver? Telles sont les questions sur lesquelles s'interrogent Lelius et ses deux gendres, Fannius et Scevola. Par ce jeu de recits enchasses, Ciceron renoue avec le Cato Major: l'entretien est deplace dans un passe lointain, et, ce qui n'est pas sans importance, republicain. Le dialogue philosophique entre Lelius, Scevola et Fannius est ainsi coupe des realites presentes. Le texte appartient donc a la veine philosophique de Ciceron et fut probablement redige a l'extreme fin de l'annee 44, entre le Cato Major et le De Officiis. Notre edition presente en un volume ce classique de l'oeuvre ciceronienne. La riche introduction fait le point sur les problemes de datations relatifs au texte et fournit tous les renseignements historiques necessaires a la bonne intelligence de celui-ci. Les personnages, reels, sont brievement decrits, tandis qu'un plan, permettant de circuler aisement dans le traite, est fourni. Les sources philosophiques de Ciceron, d'Heraclite a Theophraste, en passant par Aristote, sont analysees en detail et assorties d'une breve notice bibliographique. L'histoire des manuscrits est relatee avec precision. Des notes accompagnent la lecture sont developpees, en fin d'ouvrage, par des notes complementaires. L'ouvrage est en outre enrichi d'un Index Nominum.
