Mientras tanto, en un universo paralelo, las fuerzas francesas vencen a México el 5-5-1862, lo que lleva a la caída del gobierno del presidente mexicano Benito Pablo Juárez García. Una nueva estrella en ascenso en el ejército mexicano gana el título de presidente de México en la colonia más nueva de Francia. El rey Napoleón III tiene planes para una nueva alianza con los Estados Confederados de América, Gran Bretaña y España. Una nueva guerra para recuperar las tierras mexicanas perdidas en la Guerra de México contra los Estados Unidos en 1846 pronto sigue para distraer la atención de los mexicanos. Un grupo de personajes ahora debe lidiar con las consecuencias de la derrota del 5-5-1862. Cada uno de ellos tendrá dificultades para adaptarse a las noticias. Dulce María descubre el secreto de que está escondido su padre el coronel Abraham en un agujero en la pared. Cortez se esconde en las montañas de Querétaro, México, con el resto de los rebeldes conservadores esperando atacar un pueblo cercano para reunir suministros para su causa perdida. Eva salva la vida de un ladrón al convencer a su padre de que a veces el negocio viene antes de la venganza. El major José interviene para ayudar a un amigo en una situación difícil. Francisco gana el título de juez del Tribunal Supremo de la Nación de México después de un asesinato. Enriqueta tiene un plan secreto para preservar el poder de su familia en la Ciudad de México. El capitán Pablo encuentra una misteriosa carta que promete la oportunidad de disfrutar de una última broma antes de su retiro. Ofelia trabaja como enfermera para los Estados Confederados de América durante el tiempo cuando el campo médico no acepta a las mujeres. Lyra ayuda a llevar a cabo una operación de contrabando de algodón y tabaco desde San Antonio, Texas, al puerto de Bagdad, México, para engañar al bloqueo naval de los Estados Unidos de América.
