En plena II Guerra Mundial, la muga se convirtio, controlada su vertiente septentrional por fascistas franceses y destacamentos policiales s, en un territorio fronterizo y peligroso. Entre 1940 y 1944, la famosa Red Comete logro evacuar a 878 pilotos aliados atraves del Bidasoa. Pero hay otra red, menos conocida, que logro salvar a mas de cien perseguidos por el Reich empleando una ruta por el Pirineo, entre el valle de Aezkoa y la Baja Navarra. Entre 1942 y 1943, el gran hayedo de la Selva de Irati, entre la Francia de Vichy y la Espana de Franco, se convirtio en el paso clandestino de quienes escapaban de la guerra y la tirania hacia Inglaterra. Charles Schepens, alias Monsieur Perot, con el tiempo afamado oftalmologo belga afincado en Boston, y Jean Sarochar, alias Manech, excombatiente de la I Guerra Mundial y pastor de Mendive, fueron los dos personajes mas destacados de la red belga Zero que se encargo, junto con una amplio tejido de complices, de llevar a buen termino la fuga de mas de un centenar de refugiados. Schepens, como ingeniosa cabeza organizadora, y Sarochar, como intrepido y fabulador mugalari, burlaron a las autoridades colaboracionistas y a la Gestapo durante ano y medio, gracias a la cobertura que les proporciono el rescate de una ruinosa empresa maderera, que extraia troncos del Irati, que se transportaban por teleferico, para traviesas de tren. Sobrevivieron milagrosamente, convirtiendose en personajes miticos en aquellos valles escondidos —mezcla de Roldan y Martin-Txiki—, y fueron honrados en su tiempo por sus hazanas como miembros de la Resistencia. Su historia, sin embargo, no habia sido contada hasta ahora, exhaustivamente y con detalle. Este libro apasionante de historia, con trazas de novela de espias, documentado con rigor, erudicion y mucho trabajo de campo, nos sumerge en la epoca y en el lugar con una viveza extraordinaria: se trata de una autentico ejercicio de memoria democratica.
