Ein Buch, das vieles erklärt, was in vielleicht sachlicheren Büchern zur Jazzgeschichte nicht erwähnt wird, was aber die Schubladen ein wenig durcheinander rüttelt, weil sich Jazzbiographien nun mal selten in einer einzigen ästhetischen Schublade abspielen. Es ist ein Musterbeispiel einer von der Herausgeberin mit sicherer Hand geführten Autobiographie. (Jazzinstitut Darmstadt) Maxi Sickert ging es darum, diese Lebensgeschichte zu vergegenwärtigen, indem sie Rolf Kühn befragte und erzählen ließ. Dabei gelang es ihr, die gängigen Muster des Musikjournalismus aufzubrechen und in die Tiefe des Erlebens vorzudringen. Die Gespräche, die Maxi Sickert Rolf Kühn abverlangt hat, gewinnen die Sympathien der Leser - auch und vielleicht gerade deshalb, weil nirgendwo verklärt, sondern kritisch nachgefragt, subjektiv reflektiert und authentisch dokumentiert wird. Ein wunderbares Buch über ein bewegendes Musikerleben. Clarinet Bird - so der Titel, Bezug nehmend auf ein Bekenntnis von Rolf Kühn: >Der Himmel ist weit und ein Vogel muss frei sein und fliegen können. Das ist Jazz.
About the Author: Maxi Sickert, geboren 1969 in Berlin, ist langjährige Autorin, u.a. für Die Zeit, Tagesspiegel und Kunstzeitung zu den Themen Jazz, Improvisierte Musik und Kunst. Ihre Jazzkolumne für Die Zeit war für den Grimme Online Award nominiert. Auf verschiedenen Symposien, wie an der Columbia University New York, der Berlin Improvisors Research Group BIRG und am Heidelberg Center for American Studies der Ruprecht-Karls-Universität hat sie über ihr Forschungsthema "Visual Arts & Improvisation" referiert. Zuletzt erschienen von ihr die Bücher "Aus der Form geboren. Schüler der Klasse Paul Klee 1931-1933" und "Künstlergruppe Donnerstag-Gesellschaft. 1947-1950". Sie hat zahlreiche Buchbeiträge verfasst, u.a. in "Legenden des Soul" (Verlag Die Zeit, 2014). Die Autorin lebt mit ihrem Mann und ihren drei Töchtern in Berlin.
