About the Book

The "Black Gold Rush" was on. Oil had been discovered in California's central desert, and big money wanted it all. Coaling Station A was in the center of the drilling explosion. Really explosive, where arguments were settled with bullets, the sheriff was owned by the big bucks, and the good people stayed off Fifth Street, even during the daytime. But the brave souls at The Record weren't ready to give up. Could the newspaper, against such odds, turn the town around?
About the Author: Duncan McDougall McCollum was born the youngest child of early California pioneer descendants. From them, he developed rich historical stories based on their pioneer experiences. His father's family made the trek across the Great Plains to California around 1849, traveling with a wagon train. His great-great grandfather, James McDougall, once a constable in Scotland, traveled to America after he was reprimanded for arresting an English nobleman for a legal infraction. From his mother's family, Duncan recalls sitting around his Grandma Sudie's kitchen table listening to his Uncle Bill Orton and his older sisters recant the stories of early California. Sula May, known as "Sudie," was born in 1892 lived to be 82. Duncan always loved to hear them talk about the early days of their parents pioneering the great Central Valley. The Orton family arrived in America somewhere around 1634. They were part of the early pioneers who settled what is now Connecticut and fought off the very dangerous and brutal Pequot Indians, establishing one of the earliest settlements in the region. All of these rich stories shaped Duncan's life and he is very happy to share them with you now. Dr. Duncan McCollum, a practicing chiropractor, the acorn that never fell far from the family tree, he has raised his family of three kids, Will, Natalie and Angus in Aptos, California, with his beautiful wife Elizabeth.
