About the Book

The thoughtful novel, Collective Marks, chronicles the conflict between a willful, suspicious young man and a gifted but uncompromising horse trainer. Over the years, social worker Annie Trowbridge has worked with foster homes, schools, and other community resources to help Michael Ross, just turned eighteen, become a productive citizen, but with only partial success. Michael has only one consistent attribute-a fascination with horses. Annie sees in this interest a possible solution to his poor work history and repeated brushes with the law, and when she is called by the police to say that he is in trouble again, she makes one last effort to find him work with a horse trainer, Erik Sarmento, on an isolated horse farm. The ensuing struggle between the volatile, defensive Michael and the hard, unsympathetic trainer is the background of the novel. Michael's growing understanding of dressage and the techniques used to communicate with horses are the means by which Michael learns that he is dealing with both a gifted trainer and a potentially dangerous man.
About the Author: Nancy Feldman has actively ridden and trained horses for more than 50 years. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Literature and Psychology, and a Masters Degree in Psychiatric Social Work. Ms Feldman has been a licensed Psychiatric Social Worker in a rural Mental Health Clinic, a Registered Dressage Judge, and the District Commissioner of two member clubs of the United States Pony Clubs, of which she is a life member. The Feldmans have three grown children. They are now semi-retired, and live in Maryland, where they share their home with a dog and several horses. "It was only after my children had grown and moved away that I began to think of writing this story. Much of it was conceived and written in my mind during the hours I spent on horseback and in the barn. I began to ruminate on human and animal behavior and the ways in which they communicated with their own kind and with each other. "I decided to write this novel, as a way to share with others a true picture of both the hard work and the joys and sorrows of living with and around horses. I used only my own experience and my imagination as a guide, and until it was finished, not even my husband knew I was writing it."
