About the Book

Coma, Courage & Canes The life of SOBER JIM by Patricia Occleshaw Decker This spirited tale with a twist is a true account detailing young "Sober Jim's" life, along with his family and other brain injury survivors, as they met along the road to each hopeful recovery. Instead of a gratifying future carefully planned, many supportive TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) families often exchanged their idealistic vision for fear and turmoil. Jim's steep climb to healing is told in this captivating account of heroism, craziness, fun and stubbornness -- the minute Jim could get off his deathbed. He was never one to take situations lying down! This is "Sober Jim's" story of courage and recovery. The author -- and Jim's mother -- was elected founding president of the Southern California Head Injury Foundation, Inc. (SCHIF) in 1982. Today California is a chapter of the National Brain Injury Association - BIAUSA. In those formative years, hundreds and then thousands of families and professionals opened up a successful grassroots corridor to support the TBI population and families/caregivers. Because of their united effort, "The Decade of the Brain" was introduced to the nation in 1990, beginning advanced recovery methods and services. New roads of recovery have been amazing in modern times for the post war veterans coming home with PTS (formerly PTSD). State or nationwide helmet laws, child safety restraint laws, mandatory seat belt and air bag laws came into being. All with their beginnings here. This is their story.
About the Author: The author was founding president of the Southern California Head Injury Foundation, Inc. and mother of "Sober Jim." Jim's determination and stamina was recognized by the staff of each hospital he received treatment and therapy from and he became a star pupil wherever he went. His sense of humor and courage became widely known in the course of his recovery. Jim lived his life full of hope and determination. His story is epic. His mother gives a realistic view of what it is like to care for a head injured person and offers help to those who are going through the same thing. Yet it is done in a way that you will be looking forward to each page and chapter as it comes along. Patricia's experiences gave her an unusual ability to author this book and help others who may be going through what her family did many years ago. In these current days of extreme sports, war injuries and life in the fast lane, we see TBI injuries all around us. For instance, high school football rules are in the news today. Some if not many are currently being revised right now because of the findings of TBI head injuries. Patricia's son Jim was saved from death in 1976 when many if not most of those with severe brain injuries were destined to die or live a life in their coma. Times were now changing through modern medicine, and patients of TBI were beginning to be saved from death. With very bleak futures to look forward to. This prompted the families living with this dreaded syndrome to eventually ban together and look for answers. The medical community backed their efforts. With all the combined assistance in the medical, psychological, and law professionals, new opportunities opened up throughout the nation to improve the situation. California was the 13th state to join in this fight with the National Head Injury Foundation to give help and hope to new families coming into this terror-ridden journey. Marilyn Price Spivack and her husband, Dr. Martin Spivack had just formed an alliance with several friends and were working with the nation and Washington government to join in a national grassroots venture. This became extremely successful for the people of that time. This organization is known today as the Brain Injury Association of America. BIAA
