Comedia nueva del apostolado en las Indias y martirio de un cacique es un drama histórico barroco del siglo XVII. Aquí se relata el martirio del joven Cristóbal, hijo de Acxotécatl, por entonces cacique de Tlaxcala.

Es Toribio Benavente de Motolinía quien, en su Historia de los indios de la Nueva España, hace pública esta historia por primera vez y llama Cristobalito al niño mártir. Por lo que existen testimonios documentados de los hechos que inspiraron a Eusebio Vela.


Cristóbal nació entre 1514 y 1515

y era el mayor de tres hermanos: Bernardino, Luis y otro cuyo nombre hoy se desconoce.

Su madre era de origen noble y se llamaba Tlapaxilotzin.

Cristóbal recibió su educación en Tlaxcala, en la Orden de los Frailes Menores. Allí lo bautizaron y le inculcaron valores y creencias católicas.

Al ser el primogénito estaba destinado a suceder a su padre como cacique.

Por ello, aunque en principio su padre no le dio demasiada importancia a la religiosidad de Cristóbal, pronto entró en conflicto con su hijo. Pues este destrozó unos símbolos religiosos prehispánicos, venerados por la comunidad.

Acxotécatl perdonó a Cristóbal, pero luego tras ver que su hijo persistía en sus creencias decidió asesinarlo.

Organizó una fiesta en la casa familiar y ordenó que todos sus hijos estuvieran presentes.

Les ordenó que lo dejasen a solas con Cristobalito, lo agarró del pelo y lo arrastró por el suelo y lo pateó.

Luego lo pegó con un garrote hasta romperle los brazos y las piernas. Al ver que su hijo seguía sin renunciar a su fe, lo asesinó y lo quemó en una hoguera.

Cristobalito murió a la mañana siguiente a causa de sus graves heridas, tras llamar a su padre y darle su perdón.

Acxotécatl también ordenó la muerte de la madre de Cristóbal.

Luego enterró los restos de Cristobalito en una habitación la casa pero pronto fue detenido y lo condenaron a muerte.

Eusebio Vela introduce en Comedia nueva del apostolado en las Indias y martirio de un cacique batallas, terremotos y dragones creando una atmósfera épica y una trama trepidante. Al final de la obra Hernán Cortés acude a presenciar el descuartizamiento en vivo de Acxotécatl.
