About the Author: Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, né le 27 janvier 1814 à Paris et mort le 17 septembre 1879 à Lausanne, est l'un des architectes français les plus célèbres du XIXe siècle, connu auprès du grand public pour ses restaurations de constructions médiévales, édifices religieux et châteaux. Un mouvement de restauration du patrimoine médiéval apparaît en France dans les années 1830, porté notamment par Prosper Mérimée qui devient inspecteur général des monuments historiques, et qui demande à Viollet-le-Duc d'entreprendre des restaurations. Celui-ci restaure donc de nombreux édifices, dont le mont Saint-Michel, la cathédrale Notre-Dame d'Amiens, la cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris, la cité de Carcassonne et le château de Pierrefonds. Outre son travail de restaurateur, on lui doit aussi d'avoir posé les bases de l'architecture moderne, par ses écrits théoriques marqués par le rationalisme (Entretiens sur l'architecture, 1863), et d'avoir directement inspiré de nombreux architectes: Victor Horta, Hector Guimard, Henri Sauvage, Émile Gallé et l'École de Nancy, Eugène Grasset, Antoni Gaudí, Hendrik Petrus Berlage, Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, Auguste Perret, l'École de Barbizon...
